Disclaimer ChildsPlayPR provided me with a free samples of their product to review, and I was under no obligation to review it if
I so chose. Nor was I under any obligation to write a positive review in return for the free product and giveaway.

As a mother of 3 young boys, I am always on the quest to try to protect them from all the harm and evil in the world.  It concerns me even watching the news on the television or listening to the radio news with my boys around.  They hear such terrible things and the positive stories most of the time play such a minimal role that they are missed.

So after the Boston Marathon Tragedy I received an email about a website called Press4Kids which has developed News-O-Matic.

News-O-Matic is an educational news app that covers breaking news, sports, science and so much more in a kid friendly way.  What a godsend, especially as the devastating tornadoes that recently hit Oklahoma.

How do you address these current issues, with out traumatizing your own children.  I know personally my boys had a ton of questions after the Boston Marathon incident and the terrible tornadoes.  That is where Press4Kids can help a parent address these issues in a child friendly way.

Dr. Phyllis Ohr a Child Psychologist from Press4Kids has shared so many great tips to help address news issues with children and I am going to list a few of them here.

"When the event does not personally affect the child, reassure them
that everything is okay with the people they love and that nothing has changed
for them.

Begin by giving the child a brief synopsis of what happened by using age
appropriate language. Ask if there is something they want to know more about or
if they need something explained further. If so, stick to pointedly answering
their question or clarifying. Do not add on or digress.

If they are upset but don't want to talk, suggest a fun activity for
distraction or help them use calming skills like playing, drawing a picture or
writing a story. These activities help release any upset feelings and make
children feel better."

Back to News-O-Matic...

It is targeted for kids ages 7 to10 (which is perfect as two of my boys are in this age range).  News-O-Matic is a week day newspaper application.  Each day features 5 daily stories, detailed images, videos, illustrations, maps, time lines and games.

My boys love interacting with the Editor-in-Chief by rating the stories they are reading and even asking questions or sharing their opinions about current topics (this feature is in the "News Room" section of the app).

As a parent I love being able to give my boys a news experience that is child friendly and interactive.  They become knowledgeable and want to share this information with others.  It truly strikes a passion in them to learn and they look forward to reading the days next headlines on News-O-Matic.

Before installing the app, you do need the i-Tunes app.
