What does the month of October make you think of?

Let me guess?

Halloween or Autumn or Government Shut Down.

Well, you need to be thinking about and celebrating Non-GMO Month every October!

Non-GMO Month was created by a non-profit consumer advocacy group called the Non-GMO Project back in 2010.  They wanted to raise awareness on the GMO issue.  And if you have heard the term GMO but really don't know what it means....here is what GMO stands for...Genetically Modified Organisms.

How is something modified to become a GMO product?  One way is through genetically modified crops within our food system.  Did you know that over 90% of national soybean and corn crops are GMO.

The GMO issue affects all of us and it is concerning how little is know about GMO products and which products are Non-GMO.  As consumers I feel we need to demand national labeling for GMO products.  That way we all can make educated decisions on the food we feed our children, families and ourselves.

Speaking of making educated decisions...here is some facts for thought...with Halloween right around the corner...

Top 10 Most Common GMO Ingredients in Halloween Candy

1. Sugar (GMO sugar beets)

2. High fructose corn syrup (GMO corn)

3. Corn starch (GMO corn)

4. Soy lecithin (GMO soy)

5. Soy bean oil (GMO soy)

6. Modified food starch (GMO corn)

7. Fructose, dextrose, glucose (GMO corn)

8. Cotton seed oil (GMO cotton)

9. Canola oil (GMO canola)

10. “Other” ingredients: isolates, isoflavones, food starch, vegetable oil

So......
