Tropical Traditions 7lb Tub Organic Palm Shortening Giveaway / Review $40.75 Value and Aunt Genivieve's Apple Bars Recipe

I have found yet again another product Tropical Traditions carries that is very useful and Organic.  It is something that will help me though all my Holiday baking (and Autumn baking as you will soon see).

Tropical Traditions blessed me with another fantastic product to try and to giveaway to one of my lucky bloggy friends. A Large and 7 pound heavy bucket of Organic Palm Shortening!  A $40.75 Value!

I am sure many of you are thinking what could or would I do with a bucket of Organic Palm Shortening.  First of all.....

"What is Palm Shortening?

Palm shortening is derived from palm oil (read about Virgin Palm Oil here). In its natural state, palm oil is a mixture of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids, with most of the unsaturated fat being monounsaturated fat. Palm shortening is palm oil that has some of its unsaturated fats removed, giving it a very firm texture, and high melting point. The melting point of our Organic Palm Shortening is 97 degrees F., making it very shelf stable. It is NOT hydrogenised, and contains NO trans fats! It is great for deep-fat frying and baking, and is not prone to rancidity. Since it has been separated from some of the unsaturated portion of the oil, it is colorless and odorless, and will not affect the taste of foods like Virgin Palm Oil does. If taste is needed in applications, then Virgin Coconut Oil, Extra Virgin Olive Oil, or Sesame Oil can be added for great baked or fried foods!"

Well, I figured since it is Autumn and apples are at the peak of freshness, there was no better way to see how Tropical Traditions Organic Palm Shortening would work in my traditional recipes..than to make Aunt Genivieve's Apple Bars.

Aunt Genivieve's Apple Bar Recipe

Crust Ingredients:
2 1/2 cups flour
2 Tablespoons granulated sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup shortening.....I used 1 cup of Tropical Traditions Organic Palm Shortening
2 egg yolks in a measuring cup and fill up to 2/3 cup with milk

Filling Ingredients:
1 1/2 cups crushed cornflake cereal
8 to 10 apples, pealed and sliced
1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
Cinnamon
1 Tablespoon vanilla
1/8 stick butter

Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees.

Add all the dry ingredients for the crust and cut the Tropical Traditions Organic Palm Shortening into the dry ingredients.

Add in wet ingredients.  Mix with hands until combines.  Dough will be soft.
Roll half the dough onto a floured cloth.

Using your rolling pin, very gently roll the dough back up on to the pin, to make the transfer to the pan easier.
Place the dough onto a large cookie sheet.  Trim the dough to fit the pan.  You can use the trimmings to help fill in any gaps in the dough.

Sprinkle crushed cornflakes on to the dough.

Place the sliced apples on top of the cornflakes.  Sprinkle the granulated sugar and cinnamon onto the apples.  Add the vanilla on top.
Roll out the second half of the dough, the same as the first.  Place it on top of the seasoned apples.

Sprinkle the top of the crust with granulated sugar.

Bake one hour in preheated oven.
It turned out perfect....so Tropical Traditions Organic Palm Shortening is my new go to for all my holiday baking!
